  • Open all

    Your home contents and personal effects are covered for accidental loss or damage, including limited cover while they’re temporarily away from your residence.

    They’re not covered for theft unless it follows a violent and forceful entry to the building in which they’re located.

    Most contents under 10 years of age are covered for replacement. For other items we will either pay to have the item repaired to its condition before the loss or pay you the value at the time the loss occurred.

  • If you have family members away from home attending a learning institution such as university or boarding school and living in a residential facility provided by their place of learning, their belongings are also covered by this policy.

  • If you can’t live in your home because of damage that has given rise to a claim for your contents or on your home insurance policy, we’ll pay the cost of alternative accommodation as well as the cost of transporting your contents either to your alternative accommodation or a place of storage. We’ll also pay to move your contents back home once you’re able to return.

  • We provide cover for legally-owned software and data if the hardware or storage device they were on is damaged and is also subject to a claim.

  • We’ll cover your legal liability if you accidentally damage someone else’s property or if you accidentally injure somebody, anywhere in New Zealand. Provided you check with us first, we may also cover your legal fees.

  • If you claim for a whiteware appliance that’s less than ten years old, we’ll either pay the cost of repairing it or, if we choose to, pay the cost of replacing it with a comparable model which is more energy efficient.

  • Essence Contents cover also provides a stress payment benefit of $2000 if you have to make a claim for total loss of your contents, up to $1000 cover for keys and locks, and a benefit that will replace the contents of your freezer if they perish due to a freezer breakdown or if the power is accidentally disconnected.
