Lantern staff enjoy nothing better than a day on rubbish duty in the middle of the Waitemata Harbour

We’re an island nation and we all love our beaches and marine activities. So at Lantern we thought what better way to give back than to help keep our shores clean.

We’re extremely proud of our partnership with Sustainable Coastlines, a nationwide effort aimed at getting rid of the rubbish that washes up on our thousands of miles of coastline every day. That’s why you’ll regularly find us out at Rangitoto Island — the wastebasket of the Waitemata — picking up everything from plastic bags to polystyrene foam.

You’re probably aware that in addition to being unsightly, marine pollution can be hazardous to marine life and water quality. We see that getting rid of this toxic waste is something tangible we can do towards reducing our impact on the marine environment.

The team at Lantern have lost count of the amount of rubbish that they have collected from North Shore beaches and Rangitoto over the last year. They are passionate about playing their part in keeping our beaches and waterways clean and beautiful for future generations to enjoy.

The team were proud to support and take part in the super-sized Sustainable Coastline clean-up in December when around 2000 Aucklanders young and old took to Rangitoto with clean-sacks and removed over 200,000 items of rubbish from the island’s shoreline.

In 2011 the Lantern team have been involved in the North Shore Coastal clean-up, tree planting on the Waiho River, and continuing their clean up of Rangitoto.

The sad thing is that the rubbish keeps on coming. We look forward to the day when people stop treating our beautiful seas as a trash container, but until then you too can join us in keeping our shores clean by participating at a Sustainable Coastlines clean-up near you.
